Utilities Department, Systems Engineer responsible for Wastewater Plants

Supervised and operated 3 large wastewater operations totaling 100 MGD discharge volume.  Plant technology was pressure and gravity filtration, pH control, sedimentation and clarification units, DAF, centrifuge and filter press dewatering, oil separation facilities. Plants utilized SCADA technology.   Obtained Class D WWTP Indiana License in 1991.

 

Implemented training, upstream monitoring, treatment plant practices and process changes that were major contributing factors in reduction of NPDES violations previous to1994 for LTV.   These practices reduced pollutants and translated into $200,000 combined annual cost savings for production and for wastewater operations.  

 

Designed and implemented Integrated Process Control (Statistical Process Control) into Utilities Department –

Developed Environmental Management Practices (ISO14000) throughout all mill departments

 

Did startups on major equipment in Utilities Department 

 

Supervised thirteen operators, six millwrights and three instrument technicians.  Planned plant unit outages, scheduled equipment maintenance, gave technical assistance and listed specifications for repair and replacement parts and upgrades.   Familiar with all types of pumps, blowers, compressors and drying systems.  

 

Developed a P&M program for all major equipment. 

 

Designed and implemented a chlorination system for zebra mussel control in a 150 MGD service water system with three intakes and six outfalls.  This system has been 100% successful while reducing chemical usage by 33% since the initial startup (1992- 2001).

Operator for Waste Treatment Facility for Tank Car Cleaning

Class C Industrial Waste Treatment Plant with coagulation, sedimentation and dewatering facility

(rotary vacuum drum).  Coordinated and directed types of commodities cleaned together to enhance capabilities of waste treatment facility.  Brought facility into compliance with city ordinance for pretreatment.

 

Designed major changes in the cleaning rack and cleaning processes that boosted car-cleaning efficiency by 30%.

Lab Technician, Operator for Industrial Wastewater Facility

Ran chrome removal unit for industrial pretreatment facility, operated API oil removal system, lab tests for process control. 

 

Valparaiso Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant  (1974-1978)

 

Licensed Municipal Operator Class III and Lab Technician

Hired in as apprentice for OJT Training to accommodate technical program for Pollution Control Technology while attending IVY Tech.   Operated activated sludge systems, vacuum filter, anaerobic sludge digester.  Worked in analytical lab for NPDES Permit testing and reporting requirements.  Performed maintenance procedures on equipment, kept records on P&M and breakdowns.  Received Class III Municipal License while working in this facility.
